Cedarwood Cottage is situated in an enviable private position within the majestic grounds of the Buchanan Castle Estate in Stirlingshire, Scotland, located 1 mile west of the village of Drymen. The estate has been built around Buchanan Castle, a ruined castle commissioned by The 4th Duke of Montrose and built in 1852-1858 as a home for the Montrose family, serving as such until 1925. Cedarwood Cottage was built in 2000 looking south over landscaped gardens. The house offers superb, uninterrupted views over the Endrick Water and Buchanan Castle Golf course.
The brief was to enlarge and improve the existing dwelling and its grounds to be suitable to their needs and aspirations, with an ambition to significantly reduce their carbon footprint, harnessing renewable energies and utilise sustainable building materials as encouraged by the Supplementary Design Guidance.
Architectural intent - The extension is designed to be unique and distinctive from the existing house, however still to remain respectful to the landscape in material and detail. It has been carefully considered to suit the site and to be appropriate to its setting.
Using the site’s steep terrain, the extension has been cut into the ground, rather than sitting on it. This allows the proposal to sit lower and appear smaller in scale against the existing house, as per the Supplementary Design Guidance.
The entrance to the extension (which will now serve as the main entrance) alongside the garage are raised 800mm higher than the rest of the ground floor. This allows the gradient of the driveway from the site’s entrance to be reduced and in turn permits natural daylight to enter the basement in certain locations.
The form of the extension takes notes of inspiration from the ruins of the Buchanan Castle within the estate. The stair tower and its position to the garage volume is a key derivation to the castle’s turrets, sitting at the forefront of the main mass.
